In the 70’s, 80’s, and early 90’s, the popular thing for kids to do in their spare time was venture down to the local arcade and spend several hours feeding these giant gaming machines with their allowance.
Today, that love of the arcade has been making a comeback, thanks to parents introducing their kids through the purchase of home arcade machines, whether it be AtGames, Arcade1Up, or Polycade. I, myself, built my own arcade cabinet using the Polycade AGS software.
I am a gamer who prefers to purchase the games I love and with the Polycade AGS being not just a front end to launching games, but also a storefront, I immediately filled with joy. Finally, a way that I might be able to start buying old arcade titles instead of using ROM websites or torrents that may or may not contain viruses or malware.
Late 2024, I took it upon myself to reach out to every current copyright holders of the arcade classics. In my letters, I informed the rights holders of Polycade and how they can start earning money again from their old titles, selling it through the Polycade AGS.
Now, in late 2025, it was brought to my attention that these companies are actually fine with everyone pirating the very games they hold the rights over instead of making money from them. Except for Nintendo of course. They are still willing to allow the sale of their old titles if a company like Polycade wishes to, but, the rights holders demand thousands of dollars for an official license to sell.
When it comes to modern day computer games, it could make sense, but for something niche like classic arcade titles, it does not. A much better way for these older titles would be to grant a license where the rights holder receives a portion of each sale. It could be something simple like one dollar from each sale or a percentage of monthly sales.
I am now asking myself if I should reach out to the rights holder again, this time suggesting the best way to license their titles and doing so with companies like Polycade would be a great way to keep their old titles alive, instead of letting them die to the passage of time.
